Breast Enlargement

Breast enlargement or breast augmentation is also called augmentation mammoplasty. It is a surgical procedure that aims to increase the size, shape, and fullness of your breast. Breast enlargement surgery involves the insertion of breast implants, which are prostheses, into the breasts. This alters the size and shape of the breasts. These implants could be silicone implants, saline implants, or alternative composition implants. The first two are the most common types of implants.

Before your breast enlargement surgery, you will consult with your plastic surgeon as to the preferences for the feel, size, and shape of your breasts. Your surgeon will describe specific types of implants. These may include smooth or textured; round or shaped like a teardrop, and saline or silicone. Before your surgery, you will receive detailed information from the manufacturer of the implants. You need to read, review, and store this information carefully. Once you decide to have breast enlargement surgery, there are certain factors to keep in mind. Breast enlargement surgery may not fix sagging breasts, which may need an additional breast lift procedure.
You may also need a baseline mammogram before surgery. Your doctor may also ask you to discontinue certain medications prior to surgery. These may include aspirin-based medications, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, and blood-thinners. During your Breast Enlargement Surgery
Breast Enlargement treatment can be done in either a surgical center or an outpatient facility. It can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation, or then, under general anesthesia. In most cases, you will probably go home the same day with most patients not really requiring a prolonged hospital stay.
To insert the breast implant, your surgeon will make a single cut (or incision) in one of three places: in the crease under your breast (inframammary); under your arm (axillary), or around your nipple (perialveolar).
After making an incision, your surgeon will separate your breast tissue from the muscles or connective tissue of your chest. This will create a pocket either behind or in front of the outermost muscle of the chest wall (the pectoral muscle). Your surgeon will then insert the implant into the pocket and center it behind your nipple.
If your surgeon has inserted a saline implant, the latter is inserted empty and is then filled with sterile salt water once it is in place. Silicone implants, on the other hand, come prefilled with silicone gel. Once the implant is in place, your surgeon will close the incision with sutures (stitches) and will bandage it with skin adhesive and surgical tape.
