FEMALE-GENITAL-COSMETIC-SURGERY

Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery (FCGS) incorporates a range of procedures performed on the female genitalia to alter their aesthetic appearance and function. These procedures are usually named after the anatomical structure that is undergoing change. The surgeries are broadly divided into two main types: Vulvoplasty and Vaginoplasty.

Vulvoplasty includes Monsplasty, Labiaplasty and Hymenoplasty, whereas Vaginoplasty includes surgical vaginal tightening. Medically indicated female genital cosmetic procedures are reversal or repair of female genital mutilation, repair of congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract, and treatment for hypertrophic labia.

Non-medically indicated female genital cosmetic procedures are conducted for aesthetic reasons, such as to reduce dissatisfaction associated with actual or perceived abnormality of the genital anatomy. It could also be due to psychological reasons, such as embarrassment, poor self-esteem, anxiety, and inhibition in relationships. Functional reasons may also exist, such as to reduce pain during sexual intercourse, discomfort when exercising or wearing tight clothing, and chronic infections due to poor personal hygiene.
