Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure for altering the labia majora and the labia minora, which are the folds of skin surrounding the vulva in women. It is considered to be a vaginal rejuvenation procedure and the surgery has both medical and aesthetic benefits. The surgery typically removes excess tissue from the labia minora or “inner lips” of the vulva.

Excess labia tissue can lead to pain and discomfort during exercise and intercourse. It can also interfere with other routine activities. Also, the appearance and size of the labia may not align with a patient’s preferred aesthetic. A Labiaplasty procedure can address everything, from sexual health to general well-being.

There are two types of Labiaplasty: Trim Labiaplasty and Wedge Labiaplasty. Trim Labiaplasty, also called the Direct Excision method, removes the excess labia minora directly along the border of the labia.

The Wedge Labiaplasty, uses a wedge excision, and requires more measurement and design to ensure a proper, final length of the labia. In the trim labiaplasty method, the natural, darker, corrugated edge of the labia minora is removed and the scar line becomes the new border. In the wedge labiaplasty method, the wedge excision leaves the natural border of the labia intact and the scar is on the inside of the labia, and is less visible.

You are a good candidate for a labiaplasty if you dislike the shape and size of your labia minora. Also, you should be 18 years or older; are relatively fit and healthy; have a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI); have no serious health conditions; feel self-conscious about the size and shape of their labia; have an overly large labia; suffered unresolved tears due to childbirth; are finding it difficult to have sexual intercourse, and cannot do certain activities, such as cycling, due to discomfort.

Dr. S. Suma will explain the entire procedure to you, including which type of Labiaplasty you should undergo. Being a woman herself, she will work closely with you throughout your Labiaplasty and will completely understand and support your reasons for undergoing this surgery.

Before your Labiaplasty

The most important part of the pre-surgery preparation is the initial consultation with your cosmetic surgeon. This consultation can last anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour. In this consultation, you should discuss all your requirements and expectations from the surgery. You should also find out all the information you want about the actual surgery.

During your initial consult, your surgeon will ask you several detailed questions, such as your current health status, any previous medical problems or surgeries, previous surgeries in the genital area, your current medications, any allergies, your current smoking and drug status, and the amount of alcohol you consume, if any.

Your surgeon will examine your labia and may take confidential photos for your medical record. Your doctor will also determine the type of surgery that is best for you. This will depend on the shape and structure of your labia, the symptoms you may be experiencing, and your desires and outcomes. You should be completely open and honest with your surgeon, as this will result in a successful surgery.

During your Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty surgery takes between one to two hours. It can be performed under a general anesthetic, where you are put to sleep. It can also be performed under a local anesthetic with sedation. Your surgeon will decide what type of anesthesia is best for you.

Your surgeon will also decide whether to use the Trim method or the Wedge method. For the trim method, your surgeon will make a small, vertical incision with a scalpel or laser, along the length of the labia minora. Your surgeon will then remove any excess tissue in this area.

For the wedge method, your surgeon will remove a wedge of excess tissue from the labia. The wound is then closed, using a flap that is made of the remaining skin. This maintains the natural edges of the labia minora. Therefore, it results in less visible scarring and a more natural-looking result.

After your surgery, your surgeon will close the incisions, using dissolvable tissues or glue. Most patients can return home the same day. Sometimes, you may need to stay overnight in the hospital. You may feel a little groggy post-surgery, but this will resolve in a couple of hours.

Precautions and Procedures before and after your Labiaplasty

Your surgeon will give you instructions before, during, and after your surgery. You may need to take a week off from work, especially if you have a very strenuous job. Otherwise, you may need to take at least two days off from work.

You may also need to wait for a while before driving or before indulging in sports or exercise. You should typically wait for at least two weeks before resuming your normal exercise routine, especially if it is intense. After two weeks, you can begin gentle walking and then slowly become more active.

Your cosmetic surgeon will let you know the exact details and time frame for all of these activities.

After your surgery, you should refrain from sexual intercourse for at least a month, as this could delay healing in the surgical area. You should also avoid the use of tampons during this time for similar reasons. You should also wear loose clothes and trousers so that your clothes do not rub against the surgical site. In addition, you may experience some bleeding for about a week after surgery. You need to use sanitary napkins during this time

Labiaplasty Result

While the results of your Labiaplasty will be noticeable immediately following surgery, it may take up to six months for residual swelling to go down completely. Therefore, you will appreciate the true results of your cosmetic surgery after this time. Your scars will be pink and raised in the first few weeks after surgery. Eventually, they will fade and remain as very light lines.

Dr. S. Suma will give you detailed post-operative instructions to hasten your healing. She will ensure that you experience optimal results after your Labiaplasty surgery. Being a woman herself, D. S. Suma will have the right and unique perspective to make you very comfortable before, during, and after your Labiaplasty.
