Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, also called Reduction Mammaplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure for reducing the size of excessively large breasts. If your disproportionately large breasts cause neck pain, back pain, or other physical symptoms, you may consider breast reduction surgery. You may also suffer from a negative body image due to excessively large breasts, in which case breast reduction surgery may work for you. Even men who have large breasts, called gynecomastia, may benefit from breast reduction surgery.
Before your breast reduction surgery you should have a detailed consultation with your surgeon. She will take a detailed medical history, as well as ask you whether you have had a lump removed from your breast, or have suffered from any other medical conditions that may affect your breast.
You should be completely open with your surgeon and should discuss with her your reasons for seeking breast reduction surgery. You should also discuss any emotional issues you may have about the size of your breasts, as well as how your breasts have physically felt to you.
Dr. S. Suma is an empathetic plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgeon, who will understand your reasons for seeking breast reduction surgery. She may also take photos of your breasts, measure them, and then talk with you as to the amount of breast tissue that will need to be removed to achieve your goal.

Before your Breast Reduction Surgery

Prior to your breast reduction surgery, your surgeon will prepare you thoroughly for your surgery and will also help you plan for your recovery. She may also recommend a mammogram and a thorough breast exam prior to surgery.
Your surgeon will also ask you as to your habits as well as about the medications that you may be taking. You may need to stop taking certain medications, such as aspirin, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, and blood-thinners. Your surgeon will advise you as to which medications to discontinue. She may also ask you to stop smoking for a certain period prior to surgery.
You should consult with Dr. S. Suma prior to your breast reduction surgery. She will give you detailed instructions as to what to do to prepare for your surgery and will be by your side before, during, and after the procedure.

During your Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is usually done under general anesthesia in a hospital or in an outpatient facility. During surgery, your surgeon will either remove excess fat and/or breast tissue through surgical incisions or then, through liposuction.
Your surgeon will make an incision around the areola and down each breast. She will then remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of each breast. She will reshape the breast and will reposition the nipple and areola. The areola and nipple usually remain attached to the breast. If your breasts are very large, your nipple and areola might need to be removed and then reattached to a higher position as a skin graft.
Your surgeon will try to ensure that there is symmetry between your breasts, but some variation in breast size and shape may occur. The size of your areola may also be reduced. Also, your incision scars will fade over time, but may not completely disappear.
Dr. S. Suma will perform your breast reduction surgery with a great deal of sensitivity. She will also be present with you not only before and during your surgery but also after your surgery. This will ensure not only your speedy recovery but will allay any fears you may have about the procedure.

Precautions and Procedures before and after Breast Reduction Surgery

Your surgeon will advise you as to the precautions to take prior to surgery. After surgery, your breasts will be covered with bandages or a gauze dressing. A tube may also be placed under each arm to drain any excess blood or fluid. Your surgeon will also prescribe certain medications and antibiotics to reduce your pain as well as your risk of infection.
For the first few weeks post-surgery, your breasts will feel very tender and sensitive. They may also be swollen and bruised and your surgeon may recommend an elastic compression bra to protect your breasts. Post-surgery you need to keep ready ice, gauze and clean towels, loose, comfortable clothing, and special ointments and creams as recommended by your surgeon. You should have someone stay with you for about 24 hours after surgery, and should have someone drive you home post-surgery.
You may also need to restrict physical activity for two to four weeks while your breasts heal. Your surgeon may ask you to refrain from wearing underwire bras for a few months post-surgery. Scarring will fade over time and you need to visit your cosmetic surgeon as recommended, in order to remove stitches and check your recovery.

Breast Reduction Surgery Result

Successful breast reduction surgery can reduce pain in your upper neck, back, and shoulders. It may also increase your ability to participate in physical activities and may result in a more positive body image. You may see results immediately, though it may take some time for the scars to heal and for the swelling to go down completely.
The final result is generally permanent, though breast shape and size can change due to aging, weight gain, or weight loss and hormonal factors, pregnancy, lactation, and so on
