Breast Lift

Breast Lift surgery is also called Mastopexy and is a plastic surgery Mammoplasty procedure that raises sagging breasts by changing and modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts.
During a breast lift, the breast tissue is reshaped to restore firmness and excess skin is removed. A breast lift results in raising the breasts and nipples on the chest. You might choose to have a breast lift if your breasts sag or if your nipples point downward. While a breast lift may give you firmer breasts, it won’t significantly change the size of your breasts.
However, you can change the size of your breasts as well as restore firmness to your breasts by combining a breast lift surgery along with breast enlargement surgery or breast reduction surgery.
As you get older your breasts change, losing elasticity and firmness. This happens due to varied factors, such as pregnancy and breastfeeding; weight fluctuations, and gravity. A breast lift, however, is not for everyone. If you are considering getting pregnant, you may want to postpone your breast lift surgery, as during pregnancy your breasts could stretch, thereby offsetting the results of the lift.
Dr. S. Suma is the perfect cosmetic surgeon for your breast lift surgery. She not only has impeccable credentials, but has superior communication skills, which will be useful as she consults with you before, during, and after your breast lift surgery. She will advise you as to whether this procedure is right for you and when you should undergo breast lift surgery alone, or in conjunction with other breast surgery procedures.

Before your Breast Lift Surgery

You will need to have a detailed consultation with your surgeon about the procedure. She will take a detailed medical history, including any family history of breast cancer. She will also ask you as to any medications you may be taking and any surgeries you may have had. She will also do a detailed physical exam to determine your treatment options. She will also consider the quality of your skin tone. Breast skin with a good tone will hold the breasts in a better position after a breast lift. Your doctor may also take photographs of your breasts prior to surgery for your medical records.
You should discuss your expectations for your breast lift surgery with your doctor. You should explain why you want the breast lift as a sagging breast treatment and what you’re hoping for in terms of the appearance of your breasts after the procedure. At this time, your doctor will explain the risks and benefits to you, including possible changes in nipple or breast sensation after breast lift surgery.
Before your breast lift surgery, your doctor will most probably schedule a baseline mammogram. This will then be compared to a mammogram a few months after the procedure. These mammograms will help your doctor see changes in your breast tissue and interpret future mammograms. Your doctor will also advise you to stop smoking a few weeks before surgery, as smoking delays the healing process. She will also advise that you discontinue certain medications that increase bleeding, such as aspirin-based medications, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, and blood-thinners.
Your doctor will also ensure that you are at a healthy weight by advising that you consider making dietary changes and participate in an exercise program to assist with weight loss if you have put on considerable weight prior to surgery.
Dr. S. Suma will not only follow this detailed protocol, but will also ensure that all of your questions and concerns are completely addressed prior to your breast lift surgery. She will patiently assess your physical and mental health to determine that you are the right candidate for a breast lift surgery at this time.

During your Breast Lift Surgery

There are several different breast lift techniques from which your surgeon will choose the right one for you. Some of these techniques are Crescent Breast Lift, Periareolar Breast Lift, Vertical Breast Lift, and Anchor Breast Lift. You should discuss with your doctor as to which is the right one for you. The specific technique your cosmetic surgeon chooses will determine the location of the incisions and the resulting scars.
Your doctor may make incisions around the areola, which is the darker area surrounding the nipples. She may make incisions extending downward from the areolae to the breast creases, or then, may make incisions horizontally along the breast creases.
Your breast lift surgery may take place in a hospital, an outpatient facility, or in your doctor’s personal operating room. You will typically meet with the surgical team, including your surgeon, prior to your surgery. After this, your surgeon will mark the proper position on your breast as to where your nipple will go. You will then be brought into the operating room where you will be given general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation.
Your doctor may place stitches deep within your breasts to reshape your breast tissue and if necessary, to reduce the size of your areolae. She will also remove excess breast skin and will shift the nipples to higher positions. After this, your doctor will bring together the breast skin and will close the incisions with stitches, surgical tape, or skin adhesives.
If you are getting implants at the same time as the breast lift surgery, your surgeon will insert them and then close and bandage your breasts. She may insert tiny drains in your breasts for about 24 to 48 hours post-surgery. You will typically be allowed to go home on the day of the surgery.
If you are considering breast lift surgery alone or in tandem with other breast surgery procedures, Dr. S. Suma is the right cosmetic surgeon for you. She is extremely skilled at breast lift surgery and will work to make you completely comfortable, before, during, and after the procedure.

Precautions and Procedures before and after Breast Lift Surgery

Your surgeon will advise you as to the precautions to take prior to surgery. These will include stopping certain medications, as also smoking and alcohol, as these prevent rapid healing. On the first or second day after the breast lift procedure, your surgeon will remove the bandages and drains during your follow-up visit. She will also check the colour and blood supply of your nipples. You may be slightly uncomfortable for a few days post-surgery. Your doctor may ask you to wear a bra or have a special dressing in place to provide the support you will need post-surgery. You may also need pain medication for the first week after surgery.
Your surgeon will remove all your stitches within two to three weeks. There may be slight differences in the symmetry between both breasts. In this case, your surgeon will do a small touch-up procedure to help reposition the nipple as needed. During your recovery, it is imperative that you follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully, as well as report any problems or side effects that you may be having.
Dr. S. Suma will continue to consult with you post-surgery. She will continue to provide you with the help and support that you may need before, during, and after your breast lift surgery. She will help you tailor your expectations to reality and will deal with your particular case in a completely holistic manner.

Breast Lift Surgery Result

You will notice an immediate change in the shape of your breasts, though their shape will continue to change and settle over the next few months. Initially, your scars will appear red and lumpy but will soften and become thin and white given time. You may also notice that your bra size has become a bit smaller after breast lift surgery even though there has been no other surgery performed. This is because your breasts have become firmer and rounder.
While the effects of breast lift surgery last for a long time, your breasts may resume sagging as you age, particularly if your breasts are larger and heavier. If you can maintain a stable, healthy weight you can retain your results.
If you are considering breast lift surgery, do consult with Dr. S. Suma. She is extremely adept at this procedure and she and her team will do everything in their power to make you comfortable. She will ensure that the process is as pain free as possible and that you get the shape and size of the breasts that you want.
