Liposuction

Liposuction Male

Liposuction, or simply lipo, is a surgical procedure and a body contouring treatment that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body. This could be from the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, buttocks, or neck. Liposuction also shapes or contours these areas. Liposuction is also referred to as Lipoplasty.

You are an ideal candidate for liposuction if you are within 30% of your ideal weight, have firm, elastic skin, have stubborn pockets of fat, and are a non-smoker. You are not a candidate for liposuction if you have health problems with blood flow, or have heart disease, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.

You should have realistic expectations when it comes to liposuction. This procedure will not remove cellulite from your body. It is also not a procedure for weight loss but is a procedure to contour the body for those who are close to their ideal body contour but need a little help.

The locations for liposuction are typically genetically decided. Liposuction can diminish obstinate, fatty deposits in regions, for example, the abdomen, flanks, internal and external thighs, inward knees, buttocks, arms, and the neck. It can help reduce fat from regions where fat is impervious to decrease in spite of a solid eating routine and standard exercise. Liposuction can't treat zones, such as the cheeks, the knees, and the calves.

There are different types of liposuction available. Some of them are Tumescent Liposuction, Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction, Laser Assisted Liposuction, and Suction Assisted Liposuction. You should consult with your cosmetic surgeon as to the procedure that is right for you.

Dr. S. Suma will indeed consult with you for a long time prior to liposuction. She will discuss your reasons for undergoing liposuction and will address your doubts if any. She will also conduct a detailed one-on-one session to explain to you what the procedure will be like for you. She will carry out the best liposuction treatment for you.

Before your Liposuction

Your surgeon will take a detailed medical history (including a detailed weight history), conduct a detailed physical exam, and also advise certain pre-op lab tests to assess your health status. She may also advise you to refrain from taking certain medications, such as aspirin-based medications, certain anti-inflammatory drugs, and blood-thinners, for about two weeks prior to surgery. She will also advise you to stop smoking and consuming alcohol prior to surgery.

Your consultation with your surgeon should be as detailed as possible. You should discuss the goals, options, risks, benefits, and cost about your liposuction procedure. Before your liposuction starts, your doctor may mark the areas of your body that need to be treated. She may also take photos for before and after comparisons.

Dr. S. Suma is well aware of the importance of your liposuction procedure. She will encourage you to have a detailed consultation with her prior to surgery and also to ask her any questions or address any doubts that you may have. She will also meticulously prepare you for your surgery, both physically and psychologically.

During your Liposuction

You will first be prepped for surgery and then anesthesia will be administered. This could be either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Your surgeon will discuss the best anesthesia option for you.

After you are anesthetized, the areas to be liposuctioned are injected with a “wetting solution”. This contains normal saline, epinephrine (also called adrenaline), and lidocaine. Adrenaline shrinks blood vessels and prevents bleeding and also decreases bruising. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that creates numbness and decreases discomfort post-surgery.

The tiny incisions that are used to inject the wetting solution are also used to insert a blunt-ended wand called a “cannula”. This cannula is attached to a tube and to a vacuum to suction out fat cells permanently. The incisions are then closed with a stitch and a postoperative compression garment is placed over the area that has been liposuctioned.

Precautions and Procedures before and after Liposuction

Your surgeon will inform you as to the precautions and procedures you need to take prior to your Liposuction procedure. This may involve stopping certain medications, smoking, and alcohol. The advanced liposuction techniques available today, minimize swelling, trauma, and discomfort. With the right cosmetic surgeon, recovery from liposuction can be remarkably quick.

You may be able to return to work just a few days after your procedure, depending on the extent of the procedure and the physical requirements of your job. Your cosmetic surgeon may prescribe pain medications or may advise over-the-counter (OTC) pain killers. Your surgeon may advise you to wear a compression garment post-surgery. This will help minimize swelling and will encourage optimal skin contraction. Your scars will fade after several months and scars are typically barely visible a year or so after the procedure.

Liposuction Result

Liposuction removes fat cells from your body and these fat cells cannot grow back. However, it is important to maintain a stable weight to ensure the best and optimal results. If you gain a significant amount of weight after the procedure, your overall appearance is likely to change, as your body stores excess fat in different locations.

The results of your liposuction surgery will not be visible for about one to three months post-surgery. Most bruising will fade over two to four weeks, but some residual swelling may take up to six months to resolve fully.

Dr. S. Suma is very adept at conducting liposuction surgery for all patients. She will discuss the process with you in detail and will ensure that you undergo minimal discomfort before, during, and after the surgery. So, if you are considering liposuction surgery, Dr. S. Suma is the right surgeon to consult.
